Why Humpty Dumpty Didn’t Have a Prayer, But You Do

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,

Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.

All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

I imagine that when Humpty Dumpty fell, not only did his shell crack beyond repair but his insides got scrambled (sorry!) as well. There was no piecing together a broken yoke and oozing egg whites. The mixture of shells, yoke, and whites presents an ample picture of your brokenness. So broken, that nothing any human can do is able to make it whole again. Sad and disappointing. But there’s hope.

In the Beginning…

Let’s go back to the beginning. The story of Adam and Eve is usually understood by the themes of disobedience, guilt, sin, and punishment. Yet, at its heart is the theme of fragmentation. It is a story of the disintegration of humanity’s relationship with God. It is a story of humanity’s estrangement from creation. Here is how our guide, Dr. Meletios Webber, describes the consequences of the “fall:”

Vast gaps came to exist between God and man, between heaven and earth, between one person and another, between genders, and finally even within the human personality itself. Each and every person is internally fragmented and externally isolated from the outside world, right down to the ultimate depths of his or her being. Fragmentation within the human personality is observed essentially as the division between the mind and the nous or heart.

As a result of the fall, you are internally fragmented. This is seen most prominently in the separation of heart and mind. Do you see why you struggle with doing what you think you should do? Your mind says one thing but your heart says another. Wouldn’t it be great if they were in synch? You would be put back together again as God designed you to be.

The Mind is Not the Solution

In Western spirituality, generally speaking, the mind plays a dominant role. “Knowing” is primarily understood as an intellectual or thinking endeavor. The heart is devalued. Thought is elevated. However, in it’s fallen state, your mind is a torrent of thoughts that chaotically dominate your daily life. In this scheme, your mind is also the source of emotions and feelings. Therefore, your mind is a place of anarchy – disorder, turmoil, and noise. It’s no wonder then, that you try to sedate yourself with entertainment, drugs, work, and other distractions. All are attempts to defeat the anarchy and bring order to your mind.

So, it’s believed, that the way to transform your mind is by its “renewal” (Romans 12:2). Of course, this is true. But how you renew your mind makes all the difference. Is it enough to think, believe and feel right things about God? The truth is, you cannot think or feel your way to wholeness. Not when the mind is fragmented. It is too broken.

Using the mind alone as the solution to your fragmented life is only a Band-Aid. You can’t expect what is broken to fix what is broken. “We cannot use what is broken to fix itself,” as Dr. Webber puts it.

Healing of Heart and Mind is Needed

You need your heart and mind “defragmented,” put back in order, and in synch with one another. And, the only way that happens is by encountering the Triune God. That is what salvation is all about.

You are slowly restored from the consequences of brokenness and fragmentation as you dynamically engage God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Only the healing life of the Trinity is powerful enough to bring order to your broken inner life. Here’s a way to start finding that healing.

  • Acknowledge that you yourself are a fragmented and broken person whose only hope is God.
  • Go directly to the source of healing by encountering God in solitude and silence. He’ll meet you in your brokenness.
  • Ask God for healing of your heart and your mind.  Follow His leading.
  • Sit with God in His “office” daily and allow Him to heal you.
